Hitscan is a type of hit detection used in early First Person Shooter games. It is used in Duke Nukem 3D for various weapons to check whether or not the player hit the enemy when they fired the weapon. Hitscan is different from projectile weapons in that hitscan weapons are not limited to how fast the bullets can travel; as soon as the player fires a hitscan weapon when they are aimed at an enemy, the enemy will instantly be hit. Projectile weapons are different in this respect because the player must wait for the projectile to reach the enemy before the damage is done.
