The Shotgun in DNF is slightly altered in appearance from its DN3D counterpart. Although it is still a grayish-black pump action shotgun and has a forgrip, on top of that, the appearance is now modeled after the Remington M870. However the in-game type is not a standard RM870, instead opting for a modified hidden carry gun called "Combat Shorty".
It fires a spread of pellets that move farther apart as they leave the barrel. For maximum efficiency, use at close range. It is reloaded one shell at a time, and the loading animation can be canceled by meleeing or firing, as long as at least one shell has been completely loaded.
- The artbook reveals that the finalized shotgun in the game was another from George Broussard's collection, which he bought from a local gun show in Mesquite, Texas for $300.
- The reload animation is different depending on your stance. When you're standing, Duke lifts the gun up and vertically feeds it shells. When you're crouching Duke holds the gun in profile and inserts the shells while holding it horizontally.
- When crouching and reloading, seven tally marks are visible along with the famous Duke Nukem nuclear symbol.
- The Shotgun went through various development stages:
- 1997-1998 a Shotgun looking roughly similar to the DN3D one.
- 1999-2006 the Shotgun looks like the Duke Nukem 3D Reloaded one. Even the 1999 and 2001 Shotgun have some smaller differences.
- 2006-2008 the Shotgun is the same as in the final version, but uses different textures.
