Theories

From Duke Nukem Wiki

This page presents the theories and speculations that have arisen about the Duke Nukem universe. Anything written on this page is not definitely true; it is instead an attempt to explain certain features in the Duke Nukem universe.

[edit] The Assault species

The Assault Trooper and the Assault Captain are the same species, this much is obvious. But the Assault Enforcer may be related to their species, or even be the same species.

  • Their appearances are similar - they are the same size and space, and both are lizard-like.
    • Counterargument: The enemies are designed to look fearsome, and there are only so many ways to achieve this. A similarity in their appearances may be simply coincidental.
  • They are both part of the "Assault" group.
    • Counterargument: So? It could just be a name.

[edit] The Overlord species

The Overlord and the Assault Commander may either be related, or be the same species. Evidence to suggest this includes:

  • Their general appearance and bulky nature, such as:
    • The positions of the eyes towards the sides of their heads.
    • The bulging mouths with large fearsome teeth.
    • Counterargument: The enemies are designed to look fearsome, and there are only so many ways to achieve this. A similarity in their appearances may be simply coincidental.
  • They both fire rockets as their primary attack method.
    • Counterargument: This may mean nothing; there are only so many ways to attack in the game.
  • They are both first introduced in the same episode (Lunar Apocalypse).
    • Counterargument: This may mean nothing; Assault Enforcers and Pig Cops are not related, even though they each appear in an episode in which the other doesn't.

[edit] Octabrains and Protozoid Slimers

Protozoid Slimers may be the infant form of Octabrains, such that a Protozoid Slimer grows up and becomes an Octabrain.

  • Octabrains are often found in the same location as Protozoid Slimers and Protozoid Slimer Eggs. This could be a reference to the Octabrain parent(s) caring for its offspring.
    • Counterargument: Alternatively, their presence together may be explained by saying the Octabrains simply raise the Slimers. Since the Octabrain has strong psychic powers, its presence could fill the minds of the Slimers with hateful thoughts that turn it into a fierce enemy while it is still inside its Egg. This would also explain the lone Protozoid Slimers often found in vents - since they are already hatched, they don't need to be conditioned any more. The only connection, then, is between Octabrains and Protozoid Slimer Eggs.
  • Protozoid Slimers appear to have large brains inside them. This is an obvious similarity to the Octabrain. The Protozoid Slimer also has a number of small tendrils around its mouth, which may be similar to the Octabrain's tendrils dangling from it.
    • Counterargument: Of course, there are many differences between their appearances too.
  • One explanation of how the two are related says that Protozoid Slimers function similarly to the Facehugger from the Alien movies. One is hatched from an Egg, and attacks and latches itself to the foe's face. It could place an alien (a baby Octabrain, which may even be the Slimer's brain) inside the foe, which then hatches. There are three (tenuous) pieces of evidence for this:
    • Often, when babes are killed, an Octabrain spawns.
    • There is footage in the 2001 trailer for Duke Nukem Forever showing people with long tendrils spewing from their bodies. These tendrils could belong to Octabrains inside their bodies.
    • At the beginning of the episode The Birth, a group of Protector Drones can be seen surrounding a woman who is about to give birth (it is implied that the offspring is the Alien Queen).
      • Counterargument: This is a different species. Just because Protector Drones do it, doesn't mean Octabrains do.
      • Counterargument: The Alien Queen can spawn Protector Drones without need of humans.
        • Counter-counterargument: This is a different species. Octabrains may behave differently, and may require surrogate bodies (such as human women).

[edit] Aliens and their advanced biotechnology

The aliens have access to, and can use, advanced biotechnology.

  • The Assault Commander doesn't have any legs (at least, they are not visible). This suggests that, if it is related to or is the same species as the Overlord (see above), their legs have been surgically removed.
  • Since the Assault Commander doesn't appear to control its floatation platform with its hands, it is possible that the floatation platform has been wired directly into it, so the Assault Commander controls it as it would a limb.
  • The Assault Commander appears to fire rockets from its lower body, an ability that couldn't have come about naturally. This suggests that its body has been adapted to both store and fire rockets.
  • The Assault Enforcer has a chaingun cannon on its right arm, most likely replacing the forearm instead of encasing it (as there wouldn't be space inside it to fit the large forearm). The Enforcer can also fire the chaingun cannon at will, suggesting that the firing mechanism has been wired into the Enforcer.
  • The Mini Battlelord is the same species as the Battlelord; the only difference is that the Mini Battlelord is smaller. This difference in size might be due to the Battlelord having more training/drugs/surgery to make it fit to be in a higher command position.
  • The aliens certainly possess at least a high level of technology, as they have managed to reach Earth in the first place. Since humans are also capable of biotechnology, the aliens are likely to be able to do so as well.
