The Turret is an enemy in Duke Nukem 3D. It is first encountered on Hollywood Holocaust, the first level of the game.

Appearance[]

The Turret consists of a small, streamlined, green box with two black barrels coming out of one end. The device is mounted on a short metal bar and can rotate in all directions. It is noticeably smaller than most other enemies, measuring at about the same size as many of the weapon and item sprites.

  • The values given for the Shotgun and the explosive weapons are minimum values only.

The Turret fires its lasers quickly to inflict significant damage.

Due to being a completely mechanical enemy, in the same vein as the Sentry Drone, the Turret is unaffected by the Shrinker and therefore cannot be shrunk. However, Shrinker projectiles will stun the Turret for a few moments.

When hit by any weapon, the Turret will spin uncontrollably for a few seconds, appearing to malfunction while it is temporarily stunned.

When destroyed, the Turret will explode.

The Pistol and RPG may be the best weapons to use against the Turret. Even with auto-aim disabled, the Pistol is the most accurate weapon in the game and can quickly snipe the Turret from long distances. When stunned by the Pistol, the Turret will not have time to recover if the player continuously unloads rounds until the it is destroyed. Because the Turret is stationary and often located on ceilings away from the player, the RPG may also easily hit it without dealing any damage to the player.

Trivia[]

  • The Turret fires the same projectiles as the Assault Trooper and Assault Captain, but it has a much faster rate of fire.
  • On Sega Saturn version, the game doesn't take turrets to a total enemies amount of a level. Hence destroying a turret doesn't influence "Enemies killed" and "Enemies missed" in-game counters.
