Unused data (DN3D)
From Duke Nukem Wiki
The released version of Duke Nukem 3D contains several pieces of data that are unused in the game, such as sprites and bits of code.
Contents |
[edit] Organic Turret
A collection of unused sprites. It is unknown what this object is meant to be, although the popular opinion is that it is an organic turret, probably of alien origin, that acts much the same as the mechanical Turret that is in the game. It is also thought that it was meant to be more powerful than the Turret, and several mods and TCs that use it have shown it firing high-speed rockets.
There is an unused variable called "TURRETSTRENGTH", which may be related to this unused enemy. This variable sets the health of this enemy to 30 (cf. "ROTTURRETSTRENGTH" which sets the Turret's health to 40), ironically less than the Turret's health considering, as mentioned above, several mods and TCs that use this enemy give it more health than the Turret.
[edit] Scorpion Tank
A collection of unused sprites of what appears to be a tank-like vehicle. It is thought that this is either another vehicle for the Pig Cop to use, or a prototype or alternative to the Pig Cop Tank.
It is subbed the "Scorpion Tank" by fans, due to the appearance of its roof section being connected to rest of the vehicle only at the rear, thus looking like a scorpion's tail.
[edit] Space Suit
The Space Suit is a rejected concept. It was an item that would allow the player to survive in the vacuum of space. Nevertheless, the item still features in the released game, in the level Dark Side, albeit as just a decoration. It also features in the Zoo demonstration level next to the other items, indicating that it was originally meant to be a usable item in the game.
There is a lot of unused data pertaining to the Space Suit: a status bar icon for the Space Suit, messages that would be displayed (e.g. "SPACE SUIT ON"), and the tiles "2584/SPACEMASK" (Space Suit outfit) and "2578/GLAIR" (transparent glass) that would show the Space Suit's visor as it would appear when worn (see the image on the right).
In the pre-release version 1.0, the Space Suit exists as a proper item. It can be picked up, and it also works as intended (i.e. it prevents instant death when exposed to the vacuum of space). It also has some other effects, such as reducing the player's speed and increasing their jump height, to mimic conditions on the Moon (thus implying the facility section of Dark Side has artificial gravity, rather than simply handwaving the otherwise unrealistic gravity in that level away.
The Space Suit functioned just like the Scuba Gear: they both automatically activate when in a particular region (vacuum/underwater) and slowly drain air.
The Space Suit item was removed from the game later in development, and the level Dark Side was altered slightly such that the player could survive outside. However, as mentioned above, the Space Suit sprite and decompression chamber were not removed from the level design.
[edit] Enemy top views
There are a few sprites which show several early enemies as seen from above. These presumably would have been displayed in the Map View, but the idea was scrapped.
